Primates

Order Primates is rich in species with more than 300 species including monkeys, apes, lemurs, tarsiers and lorises listed under it. India boasts of a rich primate diversity with 14 primate species spread across different habitats throughout the country. The ubiquitous rhesus and bonnet macaques, and the gray langurs are the quintessential members of India’s wilds. Some species such as the gibbons and Gee’s golden langur in the Northeast and lion-tailed macaque in south India among others are highly endangered. Better and more stringent protection measures and restoration of their habitats is the need of the hour.
