Elephants

The Asian elephant is the largest land mammal in Asia. Slightly smaller than their African cousins, they inhabit dry to wet forest and grassland habitats in 13 countries in South and Southeast Asia. India is their stronghold with nearly 30,000 elephants roaming the wilds here. Elephants are highly intelligent and sociable, forming large herds that are led by the oldest females, the matriarchs. They are megaherbivores and each individual is known to consume up to 150 kg. of plant matter per day.
